Twice Bloomed

Orchid Contemporary, Hamilton ON.

May 23rd—June 6th 2026

Twice Bloomed brings together a new body of quilt and collage works by Toronto-based artist Genevieve Flavelle. Through practices of cutting, layering, and improvisation, the works emerge from a sustained engagement with material and process, reflecting cycles of endurance, withering, and renewal.

Drawing on craft traditions and the visual language of historic quilt patterns, each quilt is composed through an intuitive, process-based approach. Made from cotton and linen, the works emphasize colour, texture, and tactility while engaging the layered histories of quilting. The collage series, Resilient Blooms, extends the logic of quilted piecework into paper, combining coloured and handmade papers with painting and drawing. Inspired by architectural ornament and flowers observed in downtown Toronto, these works bring together built and natural forms, foregrounding moments of beauty that persist within dense urban spaces.

Across textile and paper, Twice Bloomed positions the handmade as an approach to making that offers a quiet resistance to contemporary conditions of precarity, overconsumption, and overwhelm. Grounded in the materials and rhythms of everyday life, the exhibition approaches creativity as a sustaining, lived practice.
